Jeremy Seal: The Snakebite Survivors' Club : Travels Among Serpents

The Snakebite Survivors' Club : Travels Among Serpents

Description

Snakes are Jeremy Seal's fascination, and his greatest fear. In an attempt to overcome his phobia, he decides to journey into America, Australia, Africa and India in search of the most notorious and deadly snakes, and to meet the people who live among them. His travels take him to Kenya's snake man, whose entire life seems like a preparation for a bite from the terrible black mamba, and to witch doctors, who use snakes as instruments of vengeance. He recalls the stories of Australian convicts condemned to prison in the land of the world's deadliest snake, and the story of a Southern preacher who tries to murder his wife with his church's rattlesnakes. Mixed in with all these bizarre tales are fascinating scientific facts, snake lore and ancient legends. An erudite but highly entertaining travel narrative, The Snakebite Survivors' Club taps into our general fear of snakes to tell a funny and somewhat gruesome account of the world of snakes and the people they repel, mesmerize, and sometimes kill.

She will do anything to achieve her aim; even if it means telling the greatest lie, and holding to it. Philippa Gregory proves yet again that behind the apparently familiar face of history lies an astonishing story: of women warriors influencing the future of Europe, of revered heroes making deep mistakes, and of an untold love story which changes the fate of a nation. Information on the basic use of the assessment tool is condensed from three chapters into one, with four new chapters discussing how to use and interpret WISC-IV with additional clinical populations. These new populations include pervasive Developmental Disorders including autism, Social and emotional disorders, psychiatric disorders, and medical disorders that may Motion-Based Game Design : How to Design Quality Movement Games for Wii, Kinect, and Move download PDF affect intelligence. An additional new chapter discusses intervention planning across patient populations. Each of the chapters (revised original chapters and new chapters) will additionally include case studies including diagnosis and intervention. Motion-Based Game Design : How to Design Quality Movement Games for Wii, Kinect, and Move

Description

Everyday gameplay was already revolutionized by the introduction of the Wii, and in the last year, the rapid growth of multi-touch platforms, and the introduction of the Sony Move and the Xbox Kinect, have brought movement-based games into the limelight as a growing market opportunity. Yet, there is little or no information circulating for developers and designers about how best to design movement-based mechanics. Each team goes through expensive trial and error, as they work to adapt existing properties and genres and/or to invent new ones. There is a great need for a book that brings together what is already known about movement design, both in general, and for the specific target platforms, to help reduce risk and increase the likelihood of successful design. The book will include interviews with developers who have faced the challenges outlined in the book, and who have developed commercially successful and award winning titles. The companion web site will include video clips of play of the movement game examples from the book, to better illustrate the concepts. --Author, Katherine Isbister is uniquely qualified to write this book. She studies movement mechanics and their effects on players in her lab, presents this work at GDC and Human Computer Interaction conferences. Her lab's work has been featured in Wired.com and National Public Radio's Science Friday show. --No books available yet on movement-based games. We will be first to market on this growing and important emerging category of games. --Practical advice for designers on what work well in movement game design, based on real-world social science research and lab work. The book demonstrates a perfect mix of lab tested, practical advice, combined with case studies across many genres and platforms. --Companion web site offers video clips of play of the movement game examples from the book, to better illustrate the concepts.

She will do anything to achieve her aim; even if it means telling the greatest lie, and holding to it. Be the Best Bad Presenter Ever: Break the Rules, Make Mistakes, and Win Them Over : Break the Rules, Make Mistakes, and Win Them Over

Description

One reason public speaking is such a nightmare for so many people is that they think they have to be "perfect." They drive themselves crazy trying to conform to all sorts of handed-down rules that tie them up in knots and put their audiences to sleep. Karen Hough says you can throw out those rules, relax, be yourself, make "mistakes," and connect with your audience much more effectively than the guy with the impeccable PowerPoint slides. Hough has used her unique presentation approach to take the anxiety out of one of the greatest fears in business. Her book debunks over a dozen myths about presentations to make them more fun and natural for everybody. Its authenticity and passion that win people over not polish. But you can't be authentic if you're following someone else's rules. Hough shows how you can embrace your own style and communicate your message without worrying constantly about antiquated dos and don'ts. Follow Karen's "bad advice" and you'll be surprised to learn you're actually a naturally skilled presenter.

Languishing in a jail cell, Harriet has plenty of time to sift through the memories of the three generations of women who have preceded her. As each story emerges, the strength of her family--and their deep faith in the God of justice and righteousness--brings Harriet to discovery of her own goals and motives for pursuing them. Since its initial publication eighty years ago, How to Win Friends & Influence People has sold over fifteen million copies worldwide. In his book, Carnegie explains that success comes from the ability to communicate effectively with others. He Be the Best Bad Presenter Ever: Break the Rules, Make Mistakes, and Win Them Over : Break the Rules, Make Mistakes, and Win Them Over free epub provides relatable analogies and examples, and teaches you skills to make people want to be in your company, see things your way, and feel wonderful about it. For more than eighty years his advice has helped thousands of successful people in their business and personal lives.

Michael Kenna: Rouge

Description

More than twenty years after its initial publication, Michael Kenna s seminal collection of photographs of the Ford River Rouge industrial complex is now available in a new, revised, and expanded edition. One of the world s most acclaimed photographers working exclusively in black-and-white, Michael Kenna has traveled the world to create stunning, magical images of nature and manmade objects. Known for the ethereal tone and incredibly nuanced detail of his photographs, Kenna is also a chronicler of environmental degradation. His images of an auto plant outside of Detroit, Michigan, are some of his best-known works. Long out of print, Rouge has been brought back to life with a spectacular new design, an authoritative essay by art historian James Steward, and many previously unpublished images that were part of the original series. As the city of Detroit struggles to reclaim its heritage as an American commercial and artistic hub, these photographs resonate more than ever with the stark realities and hidden beauty of the industrial landscape."

Ries and Trout provide many valuable case histories and penetrating analyses of some of the most phenomenal successes and failures in advertising history. Revised to reflect significant developments in the five years since its original publication, Positioning is required reading for anyone in business today. Kinship with All Life download ebook

J. Allen Boone: Kinship with All Life

Kinship with All Life

Description

Is there a universal language of love, a "kinship with all life" that can open new horizons of experience? Example after example in this unique classic -- from "Strongheart" the actor-dog to "Freddie" the fly -- resounds with entertaining and inspiring proof that communication with animals is a wonderful, indisputable fact. All that is required is an attitude of openness, friendliness, humility, and a sense of humor to part the curtain and form bonds of real friendship. For anyone who loves animals, for all those who have ever experienced the special devotion only a pet can bring, Kinship With All Life is an unqualified delight. Sample these pages and you will never encounter "just a dog" again, but rather a fellow member of nature's own family.

'Give Me This Mountain' is the British title of the autobiography of Dr. Helen Roseveare, graduate in medicine from University of Cambridge, in the late 1940's. A well-known missionary doctor and author, with several of her works still in print, she worked in the north-eastern province of the Belgian Congo with the Heart of Africa Mission in the 1950's and 60's. She established a substantial pioneer medical service and assisted the churches before Congo's independence in 1960, and continued there for some years after, at a time when many had to flee for their lives. Helen tells her story in down to earth terms, from playing cricket for the ladies' university side (a liberated woman even then), to her return to Britain after five months as a hostage in rebel terrorist hands. Her candid account is an antidote to any delusion that missionaries are saints who float about an inch off the ground, and see a blinding light from heaven when they receive 'the call'. She almost failed in missionary school through her personal failings. Her own admitted stubbornness, pride, know-it-all attitude, and inability to work with others made her a liability. The final decision to send her overseas came when an incident with a broken washing line proved that she at least had a sense of humour in the face of adversity! That Deadman Dance: A Novel download ebook pdf Physical dangers and her personal ambition in the Congo often almost sank her, but her faith and hard work brought her through. Her story is one of bright mountains, conquered after experiencing the dark valleys and learning to give the glory to God.

That Deadman Dance: A Novel

Description

Throughout Bobby Wabalanginy's young life, the ships have been arriving, bringing European settlers to the south coast of Western Australia, where Bobby's people, the Noongar people, have always lived. Bobby, smart, resourceful, and eager to please, has befriended the settlers, joining them as they hunt whales, till the land, and work to establish their new colony. He is welcomed into a prosperous white family and eventually finds himself falling in love with the daughter, Christine. But slowly-by design and by hazard-things begin to change. Not everyone is so pleased with the progress of the white colonists. Livestock mysteriously starts to disappear, crops are destroyed, there are "accidents" and injuries on both sides. As the Europeans impose ever-stricter rules and regulations in order to keep the peace, Bobby's Elders decide they must respond in kind, and Bobby is forced to take sides, inexorably drawn into a series of events that will forever change the future of his country."That Deadman Dance "is haunted by tragedy, as most stories of first contact between European and native peoples are. But through Bobby's life, the novel exuberantly explores a moment in time when things might have been different, when black and white lived together in amazement rather than fear of the other, and when the world suddenly seemed twice as large and twice as promising.

Description

Lie #1: I'm not afraid Lie #2: I'm sure I'm doing the right thing Lie #3: I don't care what they think of me It's 1959. The battle for civil rights is raging. And it's Sarah's first day of school as one of the first black students at previously all-white Jefferson High. No one wants Sarah there. Not the Governor. Not the teachers. And certainly not the students - especially Linda, daughter of the town's most ardent segregationist. Sarah and Linda are supposed to despise each other. But the more time they spend together, the less their differences matter. And both girls start to feel something they've never felt before. Something they're determined to ignore. Because it's one thing to stand up to an unjust world - but another to be terrified of what's in your own heart. 'The main characters are terrific in what is a moving YA novel. And an important one.' - The Telegraph' This is so thought-provoking it almost hurts to read it, yet every word is needed, is necessary and consequently this is a novel that lingers long after you've finished it' - Lovereading 'This is an emotional and compelling read that I did not want to put down. It is [...]beautifully written and the tension just simmers on the pages.' - Bookbabblers 'This book packs a very powerful punch' - Historical Novel Society 'With great characterisation, tough issues covered, and a plot which had me guessing right up until the last pages, this is a must-read. Massively recommended!' - The Bookbag 'This exceptional novel of first love and sexual awakenings is set against a backdrop of shocking racism and prejudice. It is incredibly well written as the tense, riveting story seamlessly combines fiction with historical fact.' - Booktrust 'Every now and then a Young Adult book comes along that I want to push into every readers hands both young and old and Lies We Tell Ourselves is that book for 2014' - Jess Hearts Books 'Talley has mixed two controversial topics together to create a firecracker of a story' - Cheryl M-M's Book Blog *A Goodreads Choice Awards semi-finalist 2014*

Roger Luckhurst: Late Victorian Gothic Tales

Late Victorian Gothic Tales

Description

'He was a man of fairly firm fibre, but there was something in this sudden, uncontrollable shriek of horror which chilled his blood and pringled in his skin. Coming in such a place and at such an hour, it brought a thousand fantastic possibilities into his head...' The Victorian fin de siecle: the era of Decadence, The Yellow Book, the New Woman, the scandalous Oscar Wilde, the Empire on which the sun never set. This heady brew was caught nowhere better than in the revival of the Gothic tale in the late Victorian age, where the undead walked and evil curses, foul murder, doomed inheritance and sexual menace played on the stretched nerves of the new mass readerships. This anthology collects together some of the most famous examples of the Gothic tale in the 1890s, with stories by Arthur Conan Doyle, Vernon Lee, Henry James and Arthur Machen, as well as some lesser known yet superbly chilling tales from the era. The introduction explores the many reasons for the Gothic revival, and how it spoke to the anxieties of the moment. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

The Genius in the Design: Bernini, Borromini, and the Rivalry That Transformed Rome

Description

The rivalry between the brilliant seventeenth-century Italian architects Gianlorenzo Bernini and Francesco Borromini is the stuff of legend. Enormously talented and ambitious artists, they met as contemporaries in the building yards of St. Peter's in Rome, became the greatest architects of their era by designing some of the most beautiful buildings in the world, and ended their lives as bitter enemies. Engrossing and impeccably researched, full of dramatic tension and breathtaking insight, The Genius in the Design is the remarkable tale of how two extraordinary visionaries schemed and maneuvered to get the better of each other and, in the process, created the spectacular Roman cityscape of today.
